Boid system
The boids operate under three basic rules, seperation, alignment and cohesion. Seperation means a boid will try and move away from other boids, alignment means it will try and align with nearby boids and cohesion means it will try and move to the center of other boids. With those three simple rules you can create interesting emergent flock behaviour. In Boid Battles there are also special boids shaped like pentagons that can 'artificial flocks' by attracting nearby boids towards themselves. Boids also avoid obstacles by casting rays at alternating angles until a clear path is found.
